What happened when Ravana challenged Shiva to fight?
Once Ravana went to Mount Kailash to fight with Lord Shankar in the pride of his powers. He challenged Lord Shiva for a fight. But when Shivshambhu did not give any answer to him and kept sitting meditating, Ravana made up his mind to throw him along with Kailash and started uprooting the mountain.
On this slyness of Ravana, Lord Shiva stabilized Kailash with just the force of his thumb and Ravana’s hand got buried under the mountain. Ravana was as knowledgeable as he was powerful.
But the weight of Mount Kailash started hurting his hand and he started writhing in pain. When Ravana could not remove his hand even after a lot of effort, he praised Lord Shiva while standing there and composed the Shiva Tandava Stotra.
Lord Shiva was pleased on this and freed him. Ravana then apologized to Lord Shiva for his act and took refuge in him.
